Affordable Networks for Home and Office
At RCK Computer Services, we offer the LTSP Server,
to provide affordable computing for everyone in your office,
shop or household.
The Linux Terminal Server Project is based on the
premise that low-cost work stations, networked with an
application server with sufficient computing power makes a lot
more sense in its use of both computing and financial resources.
The LTSP server will boot multiple 'thin clients' -- machines
stripped of their hard drives. It does not take a lot of
computing power to provide for a client machine. Low cost,
recycled processors with a video, sound and network card will do
the job. And in fact, given the under utilization of processing
power demanded by the average user, late model recycled
computers with moderate memory are capable of supporting a
small home or office network of four or eight clients.
While RCK has never installed an LTSP network this
large, the projects' documentation reports that 'It's not
unusual to have 50 workstations, all running Mozilla and
OpenOffice from a Dual P4-2.4 with 4GB of ram. We know
this works. In fact, the load-average is rarely above 1.0!'
The server can be sized to fit the needs of your network.
But the client costs remain fixed at $150.00 a seat (for used
equipment) for a sound, video, internet enabled workstation
with transparent user access to any application installed on
your server.
If security is your concern, know that the linux
permissions system allows for discrete delegation of just the
amount of access to the data and applications which your users
need, without compromising their data to unwanted access by
other users.
And best of all, the server-client architecture of an
LTSP network means that you have only one machine to secure,
serve, maintain and upgrade. While you use used, otherwise
obsolete equipment or even new affordable and space-saving
thin clients on your desktops.
